FOLKY!  That’s is the best word that can be used to describe this ever so quirky and charming creature.  What is it?  Your guess is as good as mine, although I think it might be either a dog or a very large mouse.  I also truly believe that it was made by a child judging by its naïve and unpolished nature.

Measuring 4 inches long by 1 3/8 inches high by1 ¼ inches wide, it is entirely and crudely hand-sewn out of a cotton gabardine with contrasting cotton ears, tails and forepaws.  Around its neck is a stain bow and its eyes, mouth and nose are stitched out of cotton floss.  It is stuffed with sawdust and shows evidence of having been relegated to the sewing basket at some time as there are various and sundry pinholes in its back.  There are no rips or tears in the fabric, and condition is very good but showing signs of wear attendant with age and use.

He dates to around the late 19th/early 20th C.

These naïve and primitive pieces are among my favorites as they are as wonderful as they are unique.  Again, this guy would look great sitting in the lap of a cloth doll.
