In the late 19th/early 20th C the McLoughlin Bros Company was noted for its high quality chromolithographic publishing.

This puzzle box is a fine example of that work.

The box itself is a beauty to behold, constructed of cardboard and wood covered in deep blue and gold paper around its rims with an exquisite cover illustration on its lid.  The box measures 11 by 9 inches and is in very good condition.  There are 2 partial tears in the lid (see photo) that have been mended with tape a very long time ago.

Inside the box there are 5 puzzles, each measuring 10 by 10 inches.  They are in very good condition, as well.  One or two show a bit of wear attendant with age and use (see photos).

The puzzles tell the story of the kittens who lost their mitts in wonderful early depiction, probably taken from an earlier book rendition as was common for the McLoughlin company to do.  There was much cross over in images between their books, puzzles and games.

Early McLaughlin items are very hard to find, let alone puzzles with their original box.  This piece came out of my personal collection of children’s paper, games and puzzles.  It’s always been one of my favorites, but I’ve decided that when you have things in a drawer and no more room for display – it’s time to let them go so someone else can enjoy them.
