Late 19th C Hooked Rug

Late 19th C Hooked Rug
This is a wonderful and very whimsical piece of folk art. Found in Southeastern Pennsylvania and dating to the late 19th C and measuring 33 by 45 inches, it is hooked in both wool and cotton rag strips on a burlap ground.

Naively conceived and done, the central figure, a solitary Black Feline is surrounded by four stars.  The border,  comprised of pairs of birds facing each other, is somewhat difficult to discern at first because of its free-style abstract nature but once you see them they add to the overall "wow" factor of the rug.

This rug was featured in Trish Herr's book, Rags to Rugs: Hooked & Handsewn Rugs of Pennsylvania. ( See page 124. A copy of the book will be given to the purchaser of the rug.)

Because of its larger size and central black cat figure, it makes for a great centerpiece of a display of cherished folk art pieces.
