This charming girl has a very sweet countenance in her original floss stitched features and hair. There is also some evidence of a bit of dark watercolor hair atop her head.

Both machine and hand sewn and unusual in construction, her body is fashioned out of red, white and natural heavy ticking (see photos). It is hard and solidly stuffed with either sawdust or sand. Her head and arms are of natural homespun linen. They have been over-applied on the ticked body. I can only surmise that mom did not have enough linen to fashion the entire doll, so used the best fabric where it would be seen and vital to decoration.

Her clothing, which is both machine and hand-sewn, is original and made to fit her body which is slender at the waistline. She also wears her original petticoat, as well as a pair of heavy black cotton sateen boots which are also securely sewn to her body. One of the boots has blown its sole a long time ago.

She stands 16 inches tall, and measures 4 ½ inches shoulder to shoulder and is in excellent condition for her age, for which I place her to have been made during the last quarter of the 19th C.

She was purchased out of a New York dealer's collection and is from the Madison region of that state.

She is a delightful, charming and wonderfully dear creature just waiting to join your girls for afternoon tea at your house!
