Old Cloth Doll

Old Cloth Doll

When I bought this girl several years ago, she was an entirely different entity as mothers were wont to make over older dolls for younger children when a new one was an expense that could not be afforded. She was covered in feedsack fabric and dressed in a 1920's dress. Careful inspection revealed that there was another, much older personage underneath just waiting to see the light of day again. After carefully removing the loose layers, this sweet girl was liberated. Skillfully done by the maker, her body is entirely hand-stitched out of homespun linen and she is stuffed with rags and cotton. There are pale remnants of a water color face barely visible. Measuring 17 inches tall and 5 inches wide at her broadest, she has been re-dressed in clothing of the appropriate period. She dates to the last quarter of the 19th C. Found in Monroe County, Pennsylvania and quite the love, she would make a great addition to a collection, or a stand alone piece of folk art.
