I still am not quite sure what this reticule would have been used to hold.  What I do know is that it is quite wonderful and interesting.

It is made of an absolutely fabulous tan, cream and red striped ticking fabric and is machine sewn with hand finishing.  It measures 14 inches in length with an additional 3 inches of hand crocheted and knotted cotton fringe, and is 9 ½ inches wide.  The diameter of the opening is about 4 ½ inches.  It is in excellent condition, nice and crisp and still retains its original bone ring for hanging.  There is a small bit of soil,  1 by 2 inches,  in the lower right corner, but I have never tried to remove it so it might just be a matter of a light application of soap and soft cloth to the area as it does not bleed into the other side of the bag.

Unusual and quite wonderful, this looks great hanging on a peg rack or, better still, as a lone piece on a wall or back of a door.
