What I so dearly love about this piece is its subtle, soft hue.  This petticoat has been made with a combination of my favorite “working farm” textiles: humble and versatile chambray. It’s got all I could ask for: a solid top, checked skirt and a striped hem ruffle. It’s a veritable and tasteful sampler of the combinations I love.

Measuring 21 inches in length and 8 inches across the shoulders, it is primarily treadle sewn with a bit of hand finishing. It is in very good condition, with one very tiny hole at the shoulder and a few small brown spots (see photo) attendant with age and use. The fabric is strong and supple and it still possesses its 3 original glass buttons.

This is a great example of utilitarian at its best.  A farm child’s simple yet charming everyday petticoat…or possibly it was her Sunday best.
