This is an absolutely charming pen wipe. The grouping of animals is a bit unusual in that there are two pigs, Mama and baby, and a sweet, little mouse. I can only imagine the storyline in the maker's head as she was fashioning this piece, possibly for a country fair competition.

The three critters are fashioned thus: Mama (1 ¼ inches high by 2 ½ inches in length) and baby (1 ¼ inches high by not quite an inch in height) are made of leather with original jet bead eyes. The wee but very sweet mouse is almost ¾ inches in length and made of velvet with original jet bead eyes, and cotton floss whiskers and tail.

The rug part of the wipe consists of a top red wool disc measuring 4 inches in diameter. There are three black wool disc wipes underneath measuring slightly less than the one above. The red wool wipe has a few small ink wipes on it and a brighter area of about 2 inches in length that must have been covered by another piece of fabric or name strip.

The entire piece is in excellent condition with some signs of wear consistent with age and use. I would estimate it to be from the last quarter of the 19th Century.

All in all, it is an unusual and whimsical piece to add to an existing collection, or a great piece to sit on a shelf either alone or with a grouping of miniature cloth animals. Recently purchased at auction in Pennsylvania.
