Iron Animal Door-Stop

Iron Animal Door-Stop
Iron Animal Door-Stop

There has been much debate, in the years I've own this piece, as to what kind of creature this door stop depicts. It stands in the typical squirrel stance, and its profile seems to follow suit, but it is painted black with grayish spots, so that theory begins to fly out the window. I used to like to think it was some kind of spotted cat - pushing it somewhat - but whatever the creature, it is full of wit and whimsy!

Measuring 10 inches tall to the tip of it tail by 5 inches at its widest across the base, it is fashioned out of rolled sheet iron and has an applied door wedge on the back. It is painted with what appears to be black enamel and finished with grayish/white spots. There are traces of oxidation around the tail, face and bottom edge attendant with age and use. It dates to the first quarter of the 20 th century and was found in Northampton County, PA.

Quirky and unique creature, it looks great in a collection yet can stand alone in a cupboard or on a tabletop. And, it can be any animal the new owner would like it to be.
