19th C Lancaster County, PA Wool Blanket/Coverlet

19th C Lancaster County, PA Wool Blanket/Coverlet

This is a great piece: a Lancaster County 1840's wool blanket/coverlet done in a diamond weave pattern with a chocolate brown base with red, indigo and white. All the wools are hand-dyed, so they are true coverlet colors. The red is more of a "salmon" hue or "coverlet red" and the blues (of which there are two different hues) are true indigos.

It is center-seamed and measures 76 inches wide by 84 inches in length. It is in very good condition although it has some wear along the hemmed top edge that would have been pulled up and under a person's chin, which is attendant with age and use for this piece. There is also fringe loss on both vertical sides, while most of the bottom fringe is still there. The body of the piece is strong and supple.

This is a piece that has great color and pattern to it, making it very versatile for display on the bottom of the bed, or for a blanket crane or rack.
