PA Homespun towel with Heart

This has always been another favorite of mine.

This towel may have been worked somewhere in the first 9 years of the 20th century but the fabric it is worked on is homespun linen from the first half of the 19th C.  As was often the case, yardage was saved and passed through the family and used when needed.

Measuring 42 inches long with a 2 inch drawn and tied fringe at each end, it measures 17 inches from selvedge to selvedge.  The stylized heart with initials  “AIL” in the center, as well as the started year 190 is done in turkey red cotton yarn worked in a plain chain stitch.

Since there isn’t any evidence that a numeral had been pulled or removed, why the maker never got to add the final numeral is anyone’s guess.  Maybe she became disinterested or ill, or worse.

I have always loved its typical Pennsylvania charm.  I purchased three such pieces years ago at a farm sale years ago in Lancaster County, PA.  This was the only one worked with a heart.  Over time I will be offering the other two as well.  I thought, since Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, this would be a sweet gift to add to one’s collection.
