I’ve always cherished this piece for its simple and utilitarian beauty.

Measuring 10 ¼ inches long by 7 inches wide, it is made out of early 19th C linen tow, it is both treadle and hand sewn. Judging by the wonderful patch in the upper left hand corner, I would venture to guess that it was probably made from the remnant of a larger utilitarian piece that had worn beyond its original use.  There are two brown checked cotton loop hangers that were added, later than this bag itself was made, to make it more useful to that particular owner. It is in very good condition with signs of very minor wear.   What it might have been used for I cannot really say. I believe it may have started its life as a market wallet and was given a new function by the addition of the loops.

This is a piece I’ve had in m collection for years.  From Lancaster County, PA, it will make an unsual and wonderful addition to a collection of home woven textiles. It also looks fabulous just hanging on a cupboard door.
