Mid 19th C Silhouette

I don’t know much about the origin of this particular silhouette other than that it was purchased at an estate sale in southeastern Pennsylvania.

The ebonized frame measures 9 ¼ inches long by 6 7/8 inches wide.   The frame has an old crack. The silhouette itself measures roughly 6 inches by 4 inches.  It is a well-executed water color on paper, not a cut paper piece and is in its original frame. Judging by the style of clothing, I would say it dates to somewhere between 1840-60.  Whether the child is a boy or a girl can only be speculated as it was common to dress young boys in dresses during that time period and, judging by the short hair, it could very well be a young boy’s profile. I’ve always enjoyed this piece for this very reason, wondering about the identity of the youngster and as well as the identity of the artist.
