This is a simply wonderful piece I found recently. From the exterior it appears to be a finely crafted plaid silk needle case, but upon opening you are pleasantly surprised to find a wonderful theorem painted rose on cream velvet!

Measuring 3 ¼ inches long by 2 ½ inches wide by 1 inch deep, it is entirely and meticulously hand-sewn. In excellent condition, the brown, black and mustard plaid silk is nice and supple with no cracks, rips, holes or tears. The interior cover of the needle book, as well as the edge of the pin cushion, is done in a pink silk damask. There are two small woolen “needle pages” attached to the interior front cover. There is a draw string bag attached to the back that would have held bits of thread, and it still retains its original and finely tooled brass closure clasp.

All in all, this is a very special piece. While I can’t say with absolute certainty, I do believe that this may be a Shaker piece based on the quality of the needlework and artistry involved as well as the color and type of silk used to construct the piece. It dates to the first half of the 19th C and was found in New England.

It is truly a wonderful item to add to a collection of early sewing items.
