19th C Shenandoah Valley Clock Shelf

19th C Shenandoah Valley Clock Shelf
If you’ve either been to my home, or seen photos of it, you will recognize one of my favorite pieces listed here: this 19th C Shenandoah Valley Clock shelf in its original robin’s egg blue paint.

Measuring 32 inches long by 18 inches at its widest and 8 inches deep, it is in very good condition with signs of some wear attendant with age and use.

I purchased this piece years ago out of a Southern friend’s collection and thought it was simply a great shelf although she told me that it was specifically a “clock shelf”, hence the holes in the back of the piece. I simply thought it was where it had been nailed to the wall. Then, an old time clock collecting friend came to see me and, without hesitation, said, “That’s a mighty fine clock shelf you’ve got there. You just don’t see them around anymore and that one’s a beauty!” He then proceeded to explain how the two holes were where the back of a taller kitchen clock would be attached to it to prevent it form tipping over.

I had never seen one, and having little experience with clocks, never thought about it. I just loved the shelf. It has always been great to stand a larger doll on because of its size. And it provides a very folky and colorful backdrop.
