This fabulous feline has been in my collection since I purchased her at the very first Atlantiques City show more than 20 years ago.

Measuring 14 inches from tip of nose to tip of tail, with said tail comprising approx. 4 ½ inches of that length, she stands 7 inches tall.  She is covered in golden mohair and stuffed with straw.  She still retains about 95 % of her mohair and her original glass eyes, fiber whiskers and floss nose and mouth.  She may have had a squeaker at one time but, if she did, it no longer works.  She wears a fragile blue silk ribbon with brass bell that I am uncertain as to whether it was her original collar, because I can’t seem to locate a photo of her in any of my Steiff books.

She also retains her original “underscored” Steiff earbutton.  The earbutton, which has been hard to photograph, is what is known as the “underscored” earbutton used from 1905 to 1948.  It is called “underscored” because the tail on one of the F’s is used to underscore the rest of the word.

Condition is excellent.

In terms of dating her, I was told that she dated to the period between 1905 and 1914 by the German vendor who sold her to me.  I have no reason to doubt this dating as she is similar in construction to several other animals from that period.  What I do know is that even back then when I collected early Steiff, kitties of this early time-frame and quality were hard to find and expensive.  Now, they are virtually impossible to locate and considered quite rare.

All in all, she is one fabulous kitty!  I’m hating to part with her, but am downsizing many of my toys as we prepare the house for sale sometime in the near future.  She would make a lovely Christmas present for a beloved large doll, or a beloved “living” doll!
