Pair of Circa 1900 Velvet Bears

I recently purchased these two irresistible creatures from a dealer who told me she had just gotten them out of a private collection.

“Mama” Bear measures 6 inches long and stands 3 ¼ inches tall.  She is fashioned out of a very deep navy velvet and is completely hand sewn.  She is stuffed with cotton batting and still retains remnants of her ears (which have been fastened to her body with straight pins and jet bead eyes.  Her maker gave her a whimsical character by giving her an open mouth and finished off the edges of it in a brown cotton floss.  She is in excellent condition.

“Baby” Bear stands a mere 1 ½ inches tall and is about 2 ½ inches long.  Pudgy babe is also hand sewn, stuffed with cotton batting and in excellent condition.  He still retains his brown glass eyes, cotton floss nose and mouth and his, what appear to be, paper and linen ears.  Unlike his Mum, he is fashioned out of black velvet.

Both bears are skillfully crafted and were purchased out of the same collection as a pair.  Whether they were paired up in recent times or long ago when they were first made, I cannot say.  Nonetheless, they make a fabulous and whimsical couple and are being sold together.  They are charming and quaint, and just waiting for a new home!
