Late 19th C Mennonite Cloth Bird

This is a wonderful example of another type of elusive bird: those highly prized, calico creations done by Mennonite and Amish women as “pretties”.  Done “just for nice”, these items sometimes were relegated to sewing baskets and often mistaken for pin cushions.

This particular “pretty” measures a mere 3 inches long by 1 ¾ inches tall and is about 1 ¼ inches wide.  It is fashioned out of two fabulous calicoes of the time period and still retains its original cotton floss tail and tiny wing and head tufts.  There is a remnant of silk ribbon on its back that was probably used as a hanger.  It is meticulously hand-sewn and dates to the last quarter of the 19th C.  It is in excellent condition.

Found in Lancaster County, PA, this is a great example of this from of Mennonite folk art.
