19th C Boy’s Linen Breeches

Sometimes when we get lucky, it seems we really get lucky!  Not only have I been fortunate to find the frock coat, but yet another pair of boy’s breeches out of yet another friend’s collection.

These wonderful tan and natural striped homespun linen breeches are treadle sewn with hand finishing.    They have an 11 inch waist and are 15 inches in length, and are in excellent condition.  I do believe that these were not worn very much as the fabric still retains much of its original sizing.

The button fly front has 3 unmatched mother of pearl buttons.    There is an inner waistband with button holes as these were meant to be buttoned to the shirt or coat of the wearer, as well as two cotton pockets.  They are unlined.  Found in New England, they date to 1850’s-60.

What I love about them is the quiet subtlety of the design of the fabric: pale upon pale stripe.  They are only the second pair of boy’s breeches I’ve come across in quite a long while.   Who knows when I’ll come across another….As I said when I get lucky, I get lucky……..but the dry spells can last a very long time with these ephemeral pieces of a time and culture so very long gone.
