19th C Reticule

One of my dirty little collecting secrets is that I am obsessed with reticules and seed bags.  Over the years I have amassed quite a collection, most of which has been relegated to drawers and cupboards and have not seen the light of day in a while.  I used to rotate them on peg racks and cupboard doors, but time just doesn’t seem to allow me the leisure to do that any longer.  Therefore, I have decided that some of these need to go so that they can be enjoyed, instead of hidden in storage.

This piece is a wonderful example of a late 19th C utilitarian farm reticule.  Much too large for seeds, it was probably used for trips to town or even sewing items.

Entirely hand-sewn, it measures 13 inches wide by 26 inches long.  It is in excellent condition with no rips, holes or tears and still retains its original calico draw-string, although that part of it is quite fragile due to age and use.  The fabric of the bag is fabulous: a natural, blue and brown striped pillow ticking of the time period.

This has been one of my favorites for its simplicity.  It was purchased at a farm sale in Wanamaker’s years ago, the Leaser estate.  There have been many wonderful textiles and smalls listed on this site from that sale which was a treasure-trove of wonderful pieces from the past.
