This is one of those wonderful animals that could be whatever the owner sees in it. Because of its black color and because I love cats, I have always seen it as one of the most whimsical cats in my collection. A friend, who loves bears, thought it might be a dear “teddy”. She is probably more accurate as the Black Bear is very common in Pennsylvania and you can’t find a cloth toy more Pennsylvania than this. However, you can call it what you wish.

Measuring 11 ½ inches to the tip of its ears and 9 inches at its broadest, it is hand-sewn out of a black wool blend and is stuffed with cotton batting. In good condition, with some signs of wear attendant with age and use, it still retains its original glass button eyes and red satin floss stitched mouth and nose.

Found at a farm sale in Lancaster County, PA many years ago, I am now looking to place said “kitty” in a new home. He is the cat’s or bear’s pajama’s and would definitely add charm to a collection of similar beasties.
