Early Pennsylvania Redware Stove Leg Support

In the Pennsylvania German kitchen, stoves were often very low to the ground. In order to give them height, potters fashioned leg “supports” to be placed under the legs in order to give them a bit more height. That any of these pieces have survived is a wonderment, although most show signs of their use. It is very rare at all to find a matching set of four. The forms that were created are varied, although some were more standard than others. Those that have survived are collected by both collectors of early pottery and lighting for some of them are just the right size to hold a Betty lamp. In fact, the more I see them in people’s homes; it seems they are not without a betty lamp sitting on top.

This offering is 3 inches high with a bottom diameter of 3 ¼ inches tapering to a 2 ½ inch top. It has several rim chips attendant with age and use but no cracks and very solid and stable.
