This is one of those finds that makes one’s heart beat just a little faster every time you look at it.

Just the brown calico fabric covering alone is enough to consider it a prized find, but open the book and on the very first page is an absolutely charming collage of die-cut leaves and ferns.  In the center it is signed “Miss Amanda Dietrich”.  At the bottom of the collage, it says simply “Nothing but Leaves”(See photo). What a wonderful frontispiece to an otherwise mundane Swinton’s Primer entitled “First Lessons in Our Country’s History”.

As if that was not enough of a gift, an additional prize awaits on the final page.  Namely: a very well executed pencil drawing of a bird and vine and banner, dated “Feb 4, 1880” and signed “Amanda S. Dietrich” within said banner.  “Amanda S. Dietrich” again graces the bottom right corner of the drawing (see photo).

What more can I say?  It was a very good day, to say the least, when I found this piece out in Lancaster County, PA.  Had to keep it for a while but am now passing it on to be cherished by another.
