Old Cloth Doll Bed

This is a very endearing and charming piece.

Ever the “make-do”, this doll bed is fashioned out of cardboard (possibly an old matchbox) and has been covered in brown plaid wool with an embellishment of brown cotton edging.  There is a wad of cotton batting lining the interior that is covered with two scraps of cotton to be utilized as dolly’s bedding.  In addition to the “covers”, there is also a small 1½ inch pillow stitched out of blue striped tick and covered in a cotton pillow cover.    All of it, including the construction of the bed itself, is entirely hand sewn.  The bed measures 3 ¼ inches long by a mere 2 inches high.

Dolly is a wee (2 inch) frozen Charlotte whose legs and arms are long gone.  Condition: very good with some signs of wear attendant with age and use.

One simply had to admire the ingenuity of the maker in order to produce such a wonderful toy for a beloved child.  There simply is no doubt that this toy was made with much love, possibly also a little heartbreak as mother lamented that she did not have the resources to buy her sweet girl a new doll and bed.

Price: $275
