19th Homespun Towel or Runner

A while back I offered a homespun towel with a wonderful heart and said that I had purchased three in Lancaster County, PA and would offer the others somewhere in the future.  This is the first of the other two from that sale.

Measuring 56 inches in length and 19 inches wide, with a 2 inch drawn fringe at both ends, it is worked in “turkey red” cotton floss.  With respect to the width, one edge is the fabric’s selvedge while the other has a hand-sewn hem. The patterns for the fretted star and (what appears to be a basket of flowers) appear to be either quilt templates (more likely) or cookie cutters.  Either way they give it a very folky and charming appearance.

As I stated with the other, while the red-work is most likely early 20th C the homespun linen itself is 19th C.  (See the description for the sold heart on the textile page for further info).

Condition is excellent.
