This is a nice set of early 19thC paint-decorated pine fireplace bellows.

Measuring 16 ½ inches in length by 7 inches at their widest, they are in very good condition. They still retain 95 % of their paint decoration on the front and about 80% on the back.  The front painting of three red and gold quinces with Windsor green leaves on a smoke-decorated creamy yellow ground is nice and strong, as is the Windsor green and gold star decorated edge.  The decoration on the back consists of smoke decoration on the same creamy yellow ground.

The leather part of the bellows is still somewhat supple and in relatively good condition with only ONE pea-sized hole near the edge.  It also still retains all of the brass fasteners used to tack the leather to the wood.  There still does remain a small nail with some leather remnant on the inside handle, which was probably where the strap to hang them was fastened.

They were found in a collection in New Jersey, but the owner thought she might have purchased them in New England years ago.  I don’t come across painted bellows in decent shape anymore.  They are definitely a nice find!
