This is an interesting and unusual piece that I purchased years ago at a sale in Northampton County, PA. It measures 15 inches wide by 27 inches in length. It has a hand-sewn, hem on all four sides and appears to have been made from a larger piece, possibly a bedsack, a very long time ago as evidenced by the initial in the right lower corner as well as the initial tucked into the fold of the hem on that side. I thought it might have been a towel but, after showing this piece to a friend/collector who is considered an authority on these things, it appears that it is a chairback. The machine tape applied to each corner is the give-away. It appears the lace edge, at one time, might have had a ribbon woven through it, but that was long gone when I purchased it. There are some breaks in the lace in that area but over all the lace is supple and strong. This piece is in excellent condition with no rips, holes or stains and still retains much of its original sizing. This is a great "odd" piece to add to an advanced collection.
