Fabulous 1840's Brown Calico Girl's Dress

I know that when you read my descriptions I often say that this piece or that piece is one of the best examples I have seen or owned.  The thing is, it is true.  Many of the textiles and sewing items that I am offering here are either out of my collection, or purchased at auction or estate sale.  Recently, I am having the great privilege of being able to purchase and offer quite a few pieces from friends’ private collections. Therefore I find myself in the unique position of offering many museum quality, pristine-condition pieces (that have not been seen in public for) for the first time on my website, at the shop or shows.

That having been said, I am offering one of the nicest 1840’s/’50’s girl’s dresses I have recently had the privilege to acquire from a private collection.

In pristine condition and measuring 8 inches across the shoulders and 26 ½ inches in length, it is entirely and painstakingly hand-stitched.  The roller printed cotton, is wonderful, most notably the swags of bittersweet and cream cabbage roses punctuated with periwinkle forget-me-nots and soldier gray leaves along with smaller free-floating bittersweet and cream roses, all on a fabulous latte-colored ground.  Inside there is a fabulous natural and brown striped cotton that lines the waistband. The condition is impeccable as there are no rips, holes or tears and the fabric is strong and supple, and it still retains its 3 brass hook closures.  There is a side opening so that the young lady may reach inside to get her handkerchief out of her waist pocket.

I don’t have to tell you that dresses of this nature are just not out there any more, and becoming more and more difficult to find.  As charming and sweet as could be, this piece looks fabulous hung on a peg rack or on a lone peg as a feature piece.
